HOLISTIC APPROACHES TO ENDING FGM IN THE GAMBIA: GAMCOTRAP’S RESILIENCE
The Ongoing Struggle Against FGM in The Gambia
Despite being banned in 2015, Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) remains a persistent challenge in The Gambia in 2025. The debate over the anti-FGM law in 2024 highlighted the complexities surrounding its enforcement. When a private member’s bill attempted to repeal the existing law, 30 out of 65 members of parliament voted to maintain the legal ban, showcasing a commitment to protecting women and girls from this harmful practice.
GAMCOTRAP’s Resilient Fight Against FGM
The Gambia Committee on Traditional Practices Affecting the Health of Women and Children (GAMCOTRAP) has been at the forefront of efforts to eliminate FGM for over three decades. Their approach is deeply rooted in cultural sensitivity, ensuring that change is embraced by communities rather than imposed upon them.
Key Initiatives and Strategies
GAMCOTRAP employs a multifaceted approach to tackling FGM, ensuring both prevention and long-term systemic change:
1. Community-Based Surveillance
Regional coordinators work closely with local communities to monitor and prevent FGM cases. Their proactive efforts have saved lives, with a recent success in the Central River Region where five out of eight girls were protected from undergoing FGM.
2. Engaging Traditional and Religious Leaders
By involving cultural and religious figures, GAMCOTRAP fosters meaningful dialogue that challenges long-standing beliefs about FGM. These leaders play a crucial role in shifting mindsets and advocating for alternative rites of passage.
3. Empowering Youth and Men as Allies
FGM is no longer viewed as just a women’s issue. Men, youth, and community leaders are becoming powerful advocates in challenging gender-based violence while respecting cultural values.
4. Economic Alternatives for Former Circumcisers
Many circumcisers rely on FGM as a source of income. GAMCOTRAP offers alternative employment opportunities, ensuring they can sustain themselves financially while abandoning harmful practices.
5. Advocacy for Policy and Rights Education
Systemic change requires strong legal frameworks. GAMCOTRAP actively participates in policy advocacy and public education to reinforce the importance of the anti-FGM law and raise awareness about human rights and women’s health.
Key Learnings and Insights
One of the most significant lessons from GAMCOTRAP’s work is that sustainable change requires collective community involvement. When women and girls understand their rights and the health risks associated with FGM, they become agents of change within their communities.
Furthermore, FGM prevention is most effective when it combines legal measures, social mobilization, and economic empowerment to create a long-lasting impact.
Dr. Isatou Touray, Executive Director of GAMCOTRAP, emphasizes the importance of collaboration, stating:
“The fight against FGM is not just the responsibility of women. It requires the collective effort of all stakeholders, including men, policymakers, traditional leaders, and the global community.”
Support Needed to Accelerate Change
To fully eliminate FGM in The Gambia, a coordinated and well-supported strategy is necessary. Key areas of support include:
- Strengthening Community Engagement: Mobilizing local leaders and grassroots networks for sustained advocacy.
- Survivor-Led Programs: Encouraging women who have experienced FGM to challenge gender norms and educate others.
- Increased Funding for Grassroots Organizations: Ensuring that local activists have the necessary resources to drive change.
- Sustainable Financial Support for Prevention Programs: Providing long-term investments in education, healthcare, and economic empowerment programs.
A Future Free from FGM
GAMCOTRAP’s dedication to ending FGM is a testament to the power of education, advocacy, and community-led initiatives. Their holistic approach proves that with collaboration, policy enforcement, and sustained efforts, The Gambia can move towards a future free from FGM.
