GHANA MEDICAL TRUST FUND TO SUPPORT CHRONIC DISEASE PATIENTS – MAHAMA REASSURES
Mahama’s Commitment to Strengthening Healthcare
President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his dedication to improving healthcare services across Ghana by launching the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund, popularly known as Mahama Cares. This initiative aims to assist individuals struggling with chronic diseases by reducing the financial burden of treatment.
According to a report by citinewsroom.com, Mahama made these remarks during his “Thank You Tour” in the Central Region on February 6, 2025.
Providing Financial Relief for Chronic Disease Patients
The Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund is designed to support individuals diagnosed with kidney disease, liver disease, high blood pressure, and cardiac conditions. Chronic diseases often require long-term treatment, which can be expensive, making healthcare accessibility a priority for the government.
“In healthcare, we will continue to improve our hospitals and ensure that every citizen has access to quality medical care. I will launch the Ghana Medical Care Trust Fund to assist individuals with chronic diseases. This initiative will significantly help alleviate treatment costs,” Mahama stated.
Strengthening the National Health Insurance Scheme
To further enhance healthcare accessibility, Mahama announced his plan to uncap the National Health Insurance Levy. This strategic move ensures that all proceeds will be directly allocated to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), guaranteeing adequate funding for medical treatments and hospital facilities.
“We’re going to uncap the National Health Insurance Scheme Levy so that the full amount goes to the National Health Insurance Authority. This will enable them to improve facilities and treatments provided under the National Health Insurance Scheme,” he explained.
A Positive Step Toward Quality Healthcare
Mahama’s healthcare vision aligns with the broader goal of enhancing Ghana’s medical infrastructure, supporting hospitals, and making treatment affordable for all. The initiative is expected to relieve financial pressure on patients, ensuring that individuals receive the best possible care without worrying about high costs.
His commitment to prioritizing healthcare development reflects a strong effort toward nationwide medical improvements, providing reliable support for individuals battling chronic illnesses.
