‘Queen Modjadji’ TV Series Premieres Sunday After Court Bid Dismissed
The much-anticipated TV series ‘Queen Modjadji’ is set to premiere on Mzansi Magic this Sunday, after the Gauteng High Court in Pretoria dismissed an urgent application by the Balobedu Royal Council to halt its airing. This landmark ruling has paved the way for audiences to delve into the captivating story of Queen Modjadji.
Court Dismisses Royal Council’s Bid
The Balobedu Royal Council’s attempt to stop the show was deemed lacking in urgency by Acting Judge Jacques Minnaar. In his ruling, Judge Minnaar pointed out that the applicants, including Queen Modjadji VII and the Balobedu Royal Family, had ample time to address their concerns but chose to act only after the production was complete.
“Why did the applicants not, as soon as they became aware of the production, take any steps to halt the production, even more so, as the counsel for the applicant contended where the application is of great cultural, constitutional and public significance?” Judge Minnaar remarked. He emphasized that the series, described as a historical drama inspired by true events, is a work of fiction and does not infringe on the legacy or rights of the Royal Council.
Royal Council’s Concerns and Multichoice’s Defense
The Balobedu Royal Council had opposed the series, claiming that neither MultiChoice, the owner of Mzansi Magic, nor the show’s producer, Duma Ka Ndlovu of Rhythm World Productions, had consulted them. They felt this lack of consultation disrespected their cultural heritage and sovereignty.
Conversely, the Modjadji Royal Council maintained that they had been consulted and had given their approval for the show. This internal conflict within the councils highlights the ongoing disputes regarding succession to the throne and cultural representation.
A Celebration of Lobedu Culture
MultiChoice and Duma Ka Ndlovu aim to use the series to celebrate and educate viewers about the rich Lobedu culture and traditions. The show promises to explore the legendary Queen Modjadji’s life, including her renowned ability to make rain, offering an engaging and culturally enriching experience.

‘Queen Modjadji’ is set to debut on Mzansi Magic on July 14, 2024. The series will undoubtedly spark conversations and interest in the Lobedu culture, providing viewers with a deep dive into the historical and mythical aspects of Queen Modjadji’s reign.
