Government Hospital in Western Ghana Receives Medical Equipment Donation from the Church
On Friday, January 17, 2025, the Kwesimintim Government Hospital in Western Ghana received a generous donation of medical equipment from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Dr. Simon Osei Frimpong, the hospital’s medical superintendent, accepted the items on behalf of the hospital.
The donation included vital equipment to improve care for mothers and babies, especially in the maternal and neonatal intensive care unit. Among the items donated were anaesthesia machines, phototherapy machines, foetal doppler machines, radiant warmers, an autoclave, and more. The hospital averages 165 deliveries each month, including about 50 caesarean sections, and around 40 babies need intensive care each month. The Church’s donation will help provide better care for both mothers and their newborns.
Dr. Frimpong explained that in 2023, the hospital struggled to get modern medical equipment. They reached out to the Church for help, and in 2024, two delegations from the Church visited to assess the hospital’s needs. On October 2, 2024, the Church delivered the equipment, much of which is already in use, improving the hospital’s ability to provide high-quality care, especially in areas like maternal and neonatal care, surgery, and infection control.
At the donation ceremony, President Jacob Helland, president of the Ghana Takoradi Mission, expressed his gratitude, saying, “We are honored to be with you today. During the cholera outbreak, we were treated here with professionalism. As a Church, we follow the Savior’s teachings in Matthew 25: ‘Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me.’ These medical items were made possible by the generous donations from our members worldwide, who contribute a tenth of their earnings in tithes.”
The Honorable Fiifi Buckman, Member of Parliament for Effia-Kwesimintsim, also spoke during the ceremony. He shared his personal experiences with the Church, praising its commitment to community development. He described the Church as “heaven on earth,” highlighting its focus on promoting humanity and compassion through selfless service.
Madam Joyce Bagyna, Municipal Director of Health, praised the Church’s unique funding model. She said, “These donations come from individual Church members, not from business ventures. It’s impressive and sets a standard for others to follow. It would have been difficult for the hospital to raise funds for this equipment on its own. We are deeply grateful and pray for God’s blessings upon the Church and its members.”
Mr. Jeremiah Tiimob, Deputy Director of Administration at the Regional Health Directorate, assured everyone that the equipment would be properly maintained to ensure its long-term use. He also acknowledged the Church’s other contributions to healthcare facilities across the region, including the emergency unit at Takoradi Hospital.
At the event, staff members at Kwesimintim Hospital shared their positive experiences with the new equipment, praising how it has improved healthcare in their departments.
The ceremony was attended by several dignitaries and Church representatives, including Elder and Sister Ostler from Area Welfare Services, President and Sister Helland from the Takoradi Mission, and other Church leaders.
On behalf of its staff and patients, the hospital expressed sincere thanks to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints for its generosity and continued commitment to improving healthcare in the region.
