TAKING THE RIGHT PATH: FIGHTING HIV WITH MULTIPHASIC SCREENING IN GHANA
THE IMPORTANCE OF HIV SCREENING IN ASHANTI REGION
HIV remains a global health challenge, and proactive measures such as screening and education play a vital role in combating its spread. The Ashanti Region of Ghana has taken significant steps in addressing rising HIV cases through multiphasic health screening initiatives. Olivia Graham, the Ashanti Regional Technical Coordinator of the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC), recently highlighted these efforts during a special screening event in Kumasi.
RISING CONCERNS AND INITIATIVES
Currently, the Ashanti Region reports over 66,000 cases of HIV infections, with less than 50% of affected individuals receiving Antiretroviral Therapy (ART). This emphasizes the need for increased awareness and accessible treatment. The theme for this year’s World AIDS Day celebration, “Take the Right Path: Ending AIDS Together,” reflects the region’s commitment to collective action.
The multiphasic screening event held at Kejetia Market in Kumasi showcased a variety of health assessments, including:
- HIV Testing
- Blood Sugar Level Checks
- Blood Pressure Monitoring
- Body Mass Index (BMI) Assessments
Additionally, free condoms and self-test kits were distributed to encourage safer practices and facilitate at-home HIV testing.
ADVANCEMENTS IN HIV TREATMENT
Ms. Graham stressed that HIV is no longer a “death sentence.” Modern antiretroviral treatments are effective in reducing the viral load when taken consistently, enabling individuals to lead healthy lives. She encouraged all citizens to get tested, as early diagnosis is critical for effective management and prevention.
EMPOWERING THE COMMUNITY THROUGH AWARENESS
The event served as a platform to educate the public on the importance of regular testing. A young participant, Ms. Princess Owusu-Ansah, shared her positive experience, stating, “This is my first time checking my HIV status, and I’m not scared. It’s important to always know that you are healthy.”
Ms. Graham also revealed that 3,650 new cases of HIV were recorded in 2023, with approximately 10 new infections daily. By promoting initiatives like multiphasic screening, the GAC aims to achieve a target of 95% treatment coverage for all diagnosed cases.
THE WAY FORWARD
Through these initiatives, the Ashanti Region demonstrates that community-driven programs and accessible health services can make a significant impact in the fight against HIV. The emphasis on education, testing, and treatment ensures that individuals are empowered to take control of their health and contribute to a healthier society.
CONCLUSION
The battle against HIV requires a collaborative effort. With consistent awareness campaigns and support systems, the Ashanti Region is setting a positive example for others to follow.
