Brenda Mtambo Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles Following Grandmother’s Death
Afrosoul and jazz sensation, Brenda Mtambo, has once again opened up about her ongoing battle with mental health following the recent passing of her grandmother. The award-winning musician, known for her powerful voice and deep emotional performances, took to Instagram on October 16 to share her struggles with anxiety and depression, which have resurfaced since her loss.
In a heartfelt and lengthy post, Mtambo expressed the toll that her grandmother’s death has taken on her mental well-being. “My mental health is deteriorating … I know this is too much information, I am scared not talking is killing me,” she revealed. Despite outward appearances, the singer confided that she feels as though she’s “dying from grief, anxiety, and depression.”
Mtambo, who had previously managed her mental health with a combination of exercise, medication, and occasional mini-holidays, shared that the grief of losing her grandmother has re-triggered her condition. She admitted to finding it challenging to balance her role as a public figure while wanting to heal privately. “I wanted to heal away from the public, but I can’t do that because I’m in the public eye,” she explained.
The singer’s emotional message also highlighted the weight of her responsibilities as a mother. She expressed concern about seeking hospital treatment, fearing that she cannot be away from her two young children for an extended period. Her post went on to detail her sleepless nights and frequent emotional breakdowns.
“I know I can hide it well from the outside, but I’m breaking down inside. It feels like I need to be busy every day just to avoid feeling the emptiness,” she confessed, offering a raw insight into the depths of her grief.
Mtambo’s vulnerable post has since garnered an outpouring of love and support from her fans and fellow South African celebrities. Broadcaster Melanie Bala left a message of encouragement, saying, “Oh sis… Please take care of yourself – for you and for your babies. We’ll be here when you return ❤️.”
Model and TV personality Zizo Tshwete added, “Thank you for sharing your heart. You deserve the help that you need. We are holding you up in prayers and sending love ❤️.”
Singer Buhle Mda also chimed in with a thoughtful response, quoting a profound sentiment about grief. “Grief is love with no place to go,” Mda said, commending Mtambo for taking a courageous step in sharing her truth.
