She Knows Nothing About Us!’ Naija Weighs In on Chidimma Adetshina Being Crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024
In a surprising turn of events, Chidimma Adetshina has been crowned Miss Universe Nigeria 2024, sparking a wave of discontent across the nation. Nigerians have taken to social media and various platforms to express their dissatisfaction, arguing that Adetshina’s victory does not reflect the true spirit or representation of the country.
The controversy began when News Central TV’s segment, “Jasiri,” discussed Adetshina’s win. “Jasiri,” an all-women show known for tackling social justice issues and exploring pop culture, aired an episode on September 2 that questioned the legitimacy of Adetshina’s title. The hosts, Tolulope Adeleru-Balogun, Blessings Mosugu, Katherine Obiang, and Omotunde Adebowale-David, voiced their concerns over what they perceive as an unfair selection process.
Adeleru-Balogun highlighted a particular grievance: “Was there somebody not presenting Taraba State before? If there was, then you removed somebody who was presenting Taraba to put her in that place. She has never been to Taraba.” The hosts argued that Adetshina, having spent most of her life in South Africa, lacks a genuine connection to Nigeria, which they believe is essential for representing the country on such a prestigious platform.
The discussion also centered on claims that the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant’s protocols were not properly followed. Critics assert that Adetshina’s participation and subsequent win might have bypassed the rigorous application and training processes that other contestants had to endure. Adeleru-Balogun added, “The brand itself is trying to rebrand ‘the most beautiful girl in Nigeria’ to ‘Miss Universe Nigeria’. The ratings have been low, nobody talks about the pageants anymore. For me, this was an attempt to get back in the news, done in the wrong way.”
As the debate continues, many Nigerians are voicing their opinions online, questioning the integrity of the pageant and the criteria used to select the winner. The discussion underscores a broader conversation about representation, fairness, and the evolving nature of beauty pageants in Nigeria.
