Revamped ‘Muvhango’ Makes a Grand Comeback on South African Screens
South African television enthusiasts, get ready for a dazzling return of the beloved soapie Muvhango! The new, revamped season 27 premieres on SABC 2 on August 5, promising a fresh and exciting twist that fans have eagerly awaited. The show, known for its rich storytelling and captivating drama, will now feature a “fancier, younger, fashionista, bold” vibe, as requested by its dedicated viewers.
The upcoming season introduces legendary actress Leleti Khumalo as Dr. Nonhlanhla Ximba, a former medical doctor turned successful businesswoman. Dr. Ximba enters the scene as the wife of Avhatakali Ramabulana (played by Lloyd Nedohe) and the mother of Sakhile (portrayed by Tyson Mathonsi), becoming a pivotal figure in the gripping narrative. Her presence promises to add a dynamic layer to the show, blending her professional prowess with family drama.
Fans will also be delighted to see the return of familiar faces like Liteboho Molise, Lebo Tisane, and Wiseman Zitha. However, these characters aren’t just making a comeback; they’re doing so in an upgraded, refreshed manner that aligns with the show’s new direction.
Behind the scenes, the production company Word of Mouth faced its own drama. The show’s future was uncertain as SABC nearly pulled the plug on the long-running soapie, leading to a brief hiatus in July. However, like a true telenovela, a happy resolution was reached when the SABC and Word of Mouth resolved their contractual disputes, paving the way for the show’s triumphant return.
At the relaunch event last month, Muvhango creator Duma Ndlovu expressed his excitement about the new season. “What you’re going to be seeing this season is probably the most dramatic change and growth you’ve seen because our viewers demanded that we go fancier, younger, fashionista, bold,” Ndlovu shared. “They wanted us to continue telling stories, they didn’t want us to lose the DNA of the show, but they wanted us to spice things up.”
The new season promises to deliver on these expectations, complete with a new logo, title sequence, and an infusion of youthful energy. With these exciting changes, Muvhango is set to captivate its audience like never before, making it a must-watch for fans old and new alike.
