Kenya goalkeeper probed for alleged match-fixing involvement
Investigation Initiated by FKF
The Kenya Football Federation (FKF) has launched an investigation following allegations that goalkeeper Patrick Matasi may be involved in match-fixing. This incident has sparked widespread attention in the African sport community.
Matasi, 37, currently plays for the Kenyan Premier League club Kakamega Homeboyz and has over 30 international caps. His most recent appearance for the Harambee Stars was in October during a 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. An undated video surfaced online, which the BBC could not verify, allegedly showing Matasi discussing a deal to manipulate the outcome of a league match.
Homeboyz Owner Defends Matasi
Homeboyz owner Cleophas Shimanyula stated that he spoke with Matasi, who was surprised by the video’s contents and denied any involvement in match-fixing. “He insists he is unaware of any match-fixing,” Shimanyula told African news outlet Sport Africa.
FKF’s Zero-Tolerance Policy
The FKF reaffirmed its commitment to upholding a zero-tolerance policy towards match manipulation. The federation will collaborate with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other relevant bodies to conduct a thorough investigation.
“We remain committed to maintaining the integrity of our competitions,” the FKF stated. The investigation will follow the FKF’s anti-match manipulation regulations and FIFA guidelines to ensure a fair and transparent process. The rights of the player and his club will be respected throughout the proceedings.
Continued Support for Matasi
Shimanyula expressed confidence in Matasi’s integrity, noting his exceptional performance since joining the club. “He has kept three clean sheets in three matches. In our view, he has done nothing wrong,” Shimanyula said.
“A video can often be misleading. We cannot act on rumors or speculation without credible evidence. He will continue playing for us unless the FKF provides concrete proof or official communication regarding his involvement.”
Call for Evidence
The FKF urged anyone with credible information to support the investigation, assuring that all reports would be handled confidentially. Shimanyula also challenged members of the African sport community to present evidence if they believe Matasi was involved in match-fixing.
“We stand against any form of match manipulation. In the past, we have reported cases of match-fixing by our own players, resulting in FIFA-imposed sanctions,” he said.
This case has sent ripples across the African news and African sport communities, as stakeholders eagerly await further developments from the FKF’s investigation.
