$500,000 Investment to Fast-Track Ghana Olympic Center Completion
$500,000 Legacy Fund to Complete OlympAfrica Centre Sparks Praise at GOC Congress
A new chapter in Ghana’s sporting development was written as the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) spotlighted a landmark $500,000 legacy fund during its Extraordinary Congress last Saturday. Held at the Accra International Conference Centre, the event was widely praised for its transparency, unity, and the leadership of outgoing President Ben Nunoo Mensah.
Celebrating Prudent Leadership and Progress
Delegates from various sporting federations lauded the GOC’s administration for its financial discipline and commitment to youth development. The $500,000 fund—saved over eight years—was presented as a pivotal investment earmarked for the completion of the OlympAfrica Juvenile Sports Excellence Centre in Amasaman.
This ambitious project aims to elevate youth athletic training in Ghana, positioning the country as a key player in African sport development.
Flawless Financial Reporting Wins Praise
In a move that set a new benchmark for governance in African sport, GOC Treasurer Frederick Acheampong presented the 2023–2024 financial statement, receiving rare unanimous approval.
“For the first time in the history of the GOC congress, accounts were presented without any faults or fights,” said Samuel Ayeh, a respected athletics coach and delegate from the Security Services.
Following up, Deputy Treasurer Isaac Aboagye Duah outlined the 2025 budget, which was overwhelmingly approved—reflecting growing confidence in the GOC’s leadership and financial integrity.
Constructive Voices Call for More Support
While the tone was mostly positive, there were calls for improvement. Bawa Fuseini of Ghana Athletics emphasized the need for consistency in administrative excellence. Similarly, Christen Ashiley from the Ghana Canoeing and Rowing Association advocated for equal support across all federations, particularly regarding affiliation fees to international governing bodies.
A Smooth and Historic Congress
Delegates described the congress as one of the most harmonious in GOC history. Charles Asare of Ghana Cricket noted the absence of heated debates or drama, calling it “one of the smoothest and most controversy-free meetings” ever held by the Committee.
Yakubu Abdul Razak of Ghana Kickboxing Association echoed the sentiment, commending the outgoing president for his “visionary and exemplary” leadership.
Outgoing GOC President Reflects with Pride
President Ben Nunoo Mensah addressed the media with a mix of humility and hope, reflecting on his two-term leadership with pride.
“It’s been a journey of growth, achievement and integrity,” he stated. “We’ve achieved a lot together. I only pray that the legacies we’ve built will be sustained and improved.”
He urged delegates to choose future leaders based on credibility, selflessness, and a track record of achievement, ahead of the Elective Congress scheduled for April 26.
A Legacy Project for Ghana’s Sporting Future
As a final gesture, Nunoo Mensah called on the incoming board to invest the $500,000 legacy fund into completing the OlympAfrica Centre—an unfinished project he championed during his presidency. The facility is poised to become a beacon of hope for aspiring athletes across Ghana and beyond.
His parting message also included gratitude to sponsors, the media, and supporters across the continent, reinforcing the role of unity and good governance in uplifting African sport.
