Today, we’re spotlighting Fatma Samba Diouf Samoura, the trailblazing Secretary-General of FIFA. Born in Dakar, Senegal, on September 9, 1962, she made history by becoming FIFA’s first female Secretary-General on June 20, 2016.

Her multilingual abilities and extensive experience culminated in her appointment as FIFA Secretary-General, overseeing the commercial and operational aspects of the organization. 

Under her leadership, FIFA witnessed structural changes, including the creation of a new women’s football division. Notably, she emphasized equality, challenging norms that had seen the role occupied by white men for a century. 

Samoura’s commitment extended beyond the football field. She advocated against political symbols like the remembrance poppy, emphasizing global perspectives on suffering due to war. Her tenure concluded on December 31, 2023, leaving a legacy of positive changes in FIFA’s landscape.
