DJ Maphorisa Clashes with Samthing Soweto Over New Amapiano Track Rights
Amapiano fans are buzzing with controversy following the release of “Amalanga Awafani,” a much-anticipated collaboration between Mas Musiq, DJ Maphorisa, and Samthing Soweto. The uproar stems from the glaring exclusion of Samthing Soweto’s name in the song credits, despite his unmistakable voice being a prominent feature throughout the track.
The song, which dropped on Tuesday, has quickly sparked widespread outrage on social media. Users on X (formerly Twitter) have expressed their discontent, demanding justice for Samthing Soweto, whose real name is Samkelo Lelethu Mdolomba. Many fans feel that the talented vocalist’s contribution to the song has gone unrecognized and are calling for proper credit to be given.
In an effort to clear the air, DJ Maphorisa, born Themba Sonnyboy Sekowe, took to Instagram Live to address the situation. A visibly frustrated Maphorisa explained that a misunderstanding between him and Samthing Soweto led to the song’s release without appropriate credit for Soweto’s vocals.
In the emotionally charged video, DJ Maphorisa expressed his frustration over the situation: “I’ve saved this culture of South African music. South African music is driven by this m**** f*****; I’ve saved a lot of things. I have crawled for you guys,” he declared. He continued, “Don’t make me a bad person… Everyone wants to see me down because I’m the guy. I have made this sh** happen. Amapiano is in Africa… Do you see what I have done for this country? You help people and they betray you, but I am still here, still standing, and still strong.”
This isn’t the first time DJ Maphorisa has found himself in a dispute over song credits. Other artists, such as amapiano vocalist Sir Trill, have previously accused him of not providing adequate compensation, even after featuring prominently on some of his chart-topping hits.
As of now, Samthing Soweto has yet to make a public statement regarding the issue. However, he posted a tweet with a broken heart emoji on Tuesday morning, hinting at his disappointment.
DJ Maphorisa has urged fans not to blame Mas Musiq for the credit dispute but instead to direct their concerns toward him.
Will this clash over song rights between two of Amapiano’s biggest names be resolved soon, or is this just the beginning of a much larger feud in the South African music scene?
