Breaking Barriers: Olanike Nafisat Balogun, Nigeria Customs Service’s First Female Pilot
In a historic milestone, Deputy Superintendent of Customs (Pilot) Olanike Nafisat Balogun has soared to new heights as the first female pilot in the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS). Her journey, marked by resilience, ambition, and a deep commitment to public service, has paved the way for women in aviation and beyond.
A Trailblazing Journey
Born in Kaduna and originally from Odo-Otin Local Government Area in Osun State, Balogun began her career with humble roots. She joined the NCS in 2002 as a Customs Assistant in the Airwing Unit, initially serving as a cabin crew member. Over the years, her determination led her to achieve remarkable milestones:
- 📚 Education: Earned an Advanced Diploma in Air Ticketing and Cabin Services and a Master’s in Public Administration from Ahmadu Bello University.
- ✈️ Pilot Certification: Achieved at the prestigious Flying Academy in Miami, Florida, fully sponsored by the NCS.
Despite opportunities to join private airlines offering lucrative packages, Balogun chose to remain in public service, driven by her desire to contribute to the NCS’s operational capabilities and inspire others.
A Role Model for Women in Aviation
Balogun’s words reflect her commitment and passion:
“Staying in the Service when many of my colleagues opted for better-paying airline jobs was a tough decision, but I was determined to contribute to public service and achieve my dream of becoming a pilot.”
Her journey underscores the importance of perseverance and institutional support in breaking barriers. As the first female pilot in the NCS, she not only advances the organization’s operational goals but also serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for young Nigerians, especially women.
A Nation’s Pride
The Comptroller General of Customs, Adewale Adeniyi, praised Balogun’s achievement, highlighting it as a testament to the NCS’s dedication to capacity building and innovation.
“Her story exemplifies what is possible with determination and institutional support.”
