The Hajj pilgrimage, one of the most significant events in the Islamic calendar, was marred by tragedy this year as over 1,300 pilgrims lost their lives, many due to the extreme heat in Saudi Arabia. Heat and Unauthorized Pilgrims Contribute to High Fatality Rate

Saudi authorities reported that a staggering 83% of the 1,301 fatalities were among unauthorized pilgrims who endured long, arduous walks in the blistering desert heat to perform the Hajj rituals. Saudi Health Minister Fahd bin Abdurrahman Al-Jalajel explained that these pilgrims, lacking official documentation and authorization, faced greater risks as they traversed significant distances under the punishing sun.

Health Crisis and Emergency Response

The health crisis extended beyond the fatalities, with 95 pilgrims currently receiving medical treatment in hospitals. Some of the most severe cases were airlifted to Riyadh for advanced care. The identification process for the deceased has been slow, primarily due to the lack of identification documents with many of the unauthorized pilgrims.

Significant Losses Among Egyptian Pilgrims

Egypt experienced a profound loss, with more than 660 of its nationals among the dead. Egyptian officials stated that all but 31 of these victims were unauthorized pilgrims. In response, Egypt has taken stringent measures, revoking the licenses of 16 travel agencies that facilitated the unauthorized travel of these pilgrims to Saudi Arabia.
