Kamora Freeland, a remarkable 17-year-old from Staten Island, has achieved a groundbreaking milestone by becoming one of the youngest licensed Black pilots in the country. Kamora, currently a senior at Kingsborough Early College High School, recently earned her private pilot’s license—a testament to her dedication, passion, and trailblazing spirit.

Kamora’s journey as a young pilot began with a dream and was fueled by her determination. When asked about her inspiration, Kamora shared, “I have a passion for it, and I love it.” This passion has driven her to not only pass her solo flight test but also successfully complete her cross-country flight test, challenging milestones that many seasoned pilots remember vividly.

One of Kamora’s biggest personal achievements so far was flying her mother to Martha’s Vineyard. This flight wasn’t just a proud moment for Kamora, but a symbolic journey that represents the heights she is destined to reach. For her family and community, Kamora’s accomplishment serves as an inspiration and a reminder that young Black women can conquer fields where they are historically underrepresented.

In the fall, Kamora will begin her college journey at Spelman College, a historically Black institution that aligns with her goals and aspirations. She plans to pursue a career as a U.S. commercial pilot, an industry that has seen relatively few Black women in the cockpit. Her ambition and skill are bound to take her to incredible places, both literally and figuratively.
