In a recent development that underscores the ongoing challenges within KwaZulu-Natal’s eThekwini municipality, Premier Thami Ntuli has addressed the grievances of Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) workers. The workers expressed their discontent during a protest outside the Durban city hall on Tuesday, voicing concerns over the non-renewal of their contracts at the end of July and advocating for direct employment within the municipality.
Speaking with Newzroom Afrika, Premier Ntuli highlighted the critical situation unfolding in eThekwini amidst significant political changes. The arrival of a new mayor and the integration of presidential working groups to bolster cabinet support has set the stage for a period of transformation in the municipality. Ntuli emphasized that upcoming cabinet strategy sessions will prioritize “quick wins” and align with previously agreed-upon strategies.
The backdrop of this situation includes heightened tensions surrounding the EPWP. Recent strikes by union members have underscored the urgent need for dialogue between the MEC of Cogta and the new mayor of eThekwini. Ntuli confirmed his active role in initiating discussions, stating, “I initiated that meeting where progress in the negotiations was reported.” He acknowledged the legitimacy of some grievances raised and expressed hope for a constructive report to guide the way forward.
“I am hopeful that I will be receiving a report which will pave the way forward because some of the concerns raised were quite genuine. I will be focusing on the quick wins and I’m already having talks,” Ntuli added, demonstrating his proactive approach.
As the appointed champion for eThekwini, Ntuli’s commitment to the region is evident. He emphasized, “As the appointed champion for eThekwini, I will be making eThekwini the centre of my office attraction in terms of supporting them and ensuring that we have the speed to solve the problems which are in Durban.”
