In a night of glitz, glamour, and heartfelt celebrations, popular actor Thembinkosi Mthembu emerged victorious at the 11th Annual Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and TV Awards, securing his first acting accolade.
The Simon Mabhunu Sabela KZN Film and Television Awards are a prestigious event that recognizes outstanding achievement and excellence within the South African film and television industry, with a special focus on KwaZulu-Natal. This year’s ceremony, held in Durban, was a testament to the incredible talent and dedication of the industry’s best.
Mthembu was awarded Best Actor–TV for his captivating role in “Shaka iLembe.” This win is particularly significant as it follows closely on the heels of his 30th birthday celebration, marking a milestone year both personally and professionally. In 2023, Mthembu dominated South African screens, portraying King Dingiswayo, the son of King Jobe of the Mthethwa, in “Shaka iLembe.” His lead role as Bonga in “Adulting” further solidified his status, making him the talk of the industry. Additionally, he wowed audiences with his portrayal of Bandile in South Africa’s first modern-day Western series, “Outlaws,” on Showmax.
Another notable first-time winner at the Simon Sabela Awards was veteran actor Melusi Yeni. Yeni, currently starring in Mzansi Magic’s telenovela “Sibongile and the Dlaminis” as Sokhobase, earned the award for his compelling performance.
The ceremony also celebrated KwaZulu-Natal’s dominance in reality TV, introducing a public voting category to decide the winner. The Best Reality Show award went to “KwaNjomane” on Mzansi Magic, reflecting the show’s popularity and impact.
Other big winners of the night included Deli Malinga, who took home the Best Actress–TV award, Masoja Msiza as the Best Actor–Film, and Jo-Anne Reyneke, who received the Best Actress–Film award.
Adding to the evening’s allure, KwaZulu-Natal-born Nomalanga Shozi hosted the awards for the first time, stunning attendees with her impeccable fashion choices, including a standout design by Masango by Siphosihle.
