Doctor’s License Suspended After Fatal Surgery Error: Liver Removed Instead of Spleen
In a tragic case of medical malpractice, Dr. Thomas Shaknovsky’s license has been suspended after he mistakenly removed the liver of 70-year-old William Bryan during what was supposed to be a routine spleen removal procedure. The fatal error occurred at Ascension Sacred Heart Emerald Coast Hospital in Florida, where the patient had been admitted for an enlarged spleen.
Shaknovsky, who had convinced Bryan to proceed with the surgery despite his initial reluctance, carried out the operation under questionable conditions. According to reports, operating room staff expressed concerns that Shaknovsky lacked the necessary skill and that there weren’t enough medical professionals present to assist with the complex procedure. Despite these warnings, the surgery proceeded, resulting in the removal of the wrong organ and Bryan’s immediate death.
Florida State Surgeon General Joseph Ladapo suspended Shaknovsky’s license, citing the surgeon’s incompetence as a “serious danger to the health, welfare, and safety of the public.” This isn’t the first time Shaknovsky has made a critical error. In 2023, he mistakenly removed part of a patient’s pancreas instead of their adrenal gland, though that case was settled out of court.
Bryan’s widow, Beverly, is expected to file a medical malpractice lawsuit against Shaknovsky with the help of her legal team. The case highlights the grave consequences of surgical negligence and has brought attention to the importance of thorough vetting and oversight in medical practices.
