Zuma’s MK Party Dismisses 20 Members of Parliament in Major Shake-Up
In a dramatic political twist, former President Jacob Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has abruptly fired 20 of its Members of Parliament (MPs). The news, which has sent shockwaves through the South African political landscape, comes with little to no explanation, raising more questions than answers.
The dismissals were confirmed in a letter dated August 3, 2024, from National Assembly Speaker Thoko Didiza. The letter informed the ousted MPs that the party’s chief whip, Sihle Ngubane, had officially terminated their membership, effectively barring them from continuing to serve in Parliament.
Despite the gravity of the situation, the reasons behind this mass expulsion remain shrouded in mystery. Efforts to reach the party’s spokesperson, Nhlamulo Ndhlela, for further clarification have so far been unsuccessful. Phone calls went unanswered, and a WhatsApp message sent to Ndhlela has yet to receive a response.
This move comes on the heels of another significant internal party conflict. Just days before the mass dismissal, the MK Party once again fired Arthur Zwane from his position as Secretary-General, less than a month after he had been reinstated. Zwane, who had initially replaced Sihle Ngubane—now the chief whip who communicated the recent dismissals—was accused by Zuma of misleading the party. The specifics of this alleged misconduct have not been disclosed.
Zwane’s tenure has been marred by instability. He was first removed from his post along with Treasurer-General Danisa Zulu in July, only to be reinstated and then ousted again. In a letter addressed to Zwane, Zuma reaffirmed his decision to remove him, citing misleading conduct as the reason for his expulsion. The letter also hinted at the possibility of Zwane facing further disciplinary action.
The turbulence within the MK Party underscores the ongoing power struggles and internal discord that have plagued the organization. While the details behind these high-profile dismissals are unclear, the impact on the party’s future and its position within South African politics remains to be seen.
