South African hip-hop sensation Zulu Boy is back with a powerful new single, ‘Mayibuye’, which delves deep into the current socio-political landscape of South Africa. The track is more than just music; it’s a call to action, urging citizens to reclaim their power and influence their future.
‘Mayibuye’: A Collaboration Beyond Borders
On ‘Mayibuye’, Zulu Boy teams up with Haitian-American producer Makatravelli, blending their unique sounds to create a track that speaks to both South Africans and Haitians. The collaboration symbolizes a cultural bridge, fostering unity and shared experiences between black communities across continents.
A Visual Journey Through Alexandra Township
The music video for ‘Mayibuye’ is set in the vibrant Alexandra township in Johannesburg. Reflecting on 30 Years of Democracy
“It’s 30 years of trial and error and nothing concrete or solid change. There’s a lot we can’t just say it’s all been bad, there’s a lot of good that has happened,” Zulu Boy reflects. “It’s not concrete whether the nation has moved forward or not in exploring avenues in how everyone in South Africa can be well off and can have a meal every day and be sustainable. Legal Battle with ‘Umkhokha: The Curse’ Producers
Zulu Boy’s journey hasn’t been without its hurdles. He is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Rhythm World Productions, the company behind Mzansi Magic’s popular drama ‘uMkhokha: The Curse’. Initially cast as the lead role of Mlungisi, Zulu Boy was blindsided when the role was reassigned to Nkanyiso Mchunu without his knowledge.
In an interview with IOL Entertainment, Zulu Boy shared his frustration: after receiving scripts and traveling to Durban for filming, he discovered via WhatsApp that Mchunu was already shooting scenes. Feeling betrayed, he decided to take legal action for breach of contract.
“They tried to settle and we were not satisfied with their offer and then I instructed my legal team to proceed with the legal action. Now the case is in arbitration,” Zulu Boy explained.
