From Scandal to Serenity: Nomvelo Makhanya’s Path to Recovery
Former etv Scandal actor, 28-year-old Nomvelo Makhanya, who played the beloved character Lindiwe Ngema, recently opened up about her healing journey after departing from the popular soap opera. In a candid interview on the ‘Access Genie Podcast with Ancillar Nombewu,’ Makhanya shared the details of her emotional recovery after being written out of the show unexpectedly.
Joining the entertainment industry at just 16 years old, Makhanya spent nine transformative years on Scandal. Reflecting on her departure, she recounted the shock and pain of Lindiwe’s exit, a character fans had grown to love. The decision to write her out of the show came as a surprise, leaving her grappling with the sudden change.
In 2022, Makhanya bravely disclosed to the public that her former workplace had turned toxic. She revealed that staying in such an environment would have likely driven her to suicide. Her allegations prompted a response from etv’s Scandal production, stating they were “unaware” of any toxicity in the workplace.
When questioned about facing retaliation for her public statements, the award-winning actor, now turned DJ, noted the challenges she faced. “People in power always want to show you that they hold the cards. When you start speaking out, they want to make sure that you struggle,” Makhanya said, describing how she was blacklisted, making it difficult to secure new roles.
Despite these setbacks, Makhanya managed to navigate through the financial difficulties. Her savings and income from content creation helped her stay afloat. Her resilience and determination were evident as she continued to move forward.
Discussing her healing process, Makhanya highlighted the significant progress she has made. “You never really know how healed you are until you go back to the very thing that hurt you,” she remarked. A recent visit to the Scandal set, where she accompanied a friend who is a DJ, was a testament to her growth. Makhanya described feeling a sense of peace and joy, free from anger and hurt. She was warmly welcomed by the cast and crew, which further affirmed her healing journey.
Makhanya expressed immense gratitude for therapy and her support system, crediting them for her recovery. She emphasized the importance of seeking help and having a strong network during challenging times.
