Breaking News: Joburg Mayor Kabelo Gwamanda Resigns Amid Political Turmoil
In a surprising turn of events, Kabelo Gwamanda, the Mayor of Johannesburg, has resigned from his position after weeks of mounting pressure and allegations of incompetence. Gwamanda, who has faced increasing criticism from civil organizations and political parties, submitted his resignation letter to the Speaker of the Joburg Council on Tuesday.
The young mayor, who took office with a promise to stabilize the city’s finances and administration, cited the ongoing political changes following the May 29 National and Provincial Elections as a significant factor in his decision to step down. Gwamanda stated in his resignation letter, “As the youngest Mayor of Johannesburg, I am humbled by the opportunity to have led this City and to have stabilized it financially and administratively following the collapse of the multi-party coalition government.”
Despite the challenges, Gwamanda highlighted his administration’s achievements, noting that they had placed the city on a path of good governance and had achieved some of the best audit outcomes in years. “I shall continue to serve the people of Johannesburg as a councillor and will forever cherish the experience afforded to me in my tenure as the executive mayor,” he added.
Rumors are swirling that the African National Congress’ Dada Morero, currently the Finance MMC in the metro, may be Gwamanda’s successor. Morero, who previously served as city mayor before being ousted due to political infighting, is also the ANC Johannesburg region chairperson.
Gwamanda’s resignation marks a significant moment in Johannesburg’s political landscape, raising questions about the city’s future governance and the stability of its leadership.
