Ramaphosa’s Vision: How a GNU Could Be the ANC’s Path to Power
In a recent political overview at the NEC Lekgotla at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the pivotal role of the Government of National Unity (GNU) in South Africa’s political landscape. Far from a conventional coalition, Ramaphosa emphasized that the GNU, which includes nine other parties, is a unique entity designed to serve the interests of all South Africans, even amidst ideological differences.
“We entered into this GNU with nine other parties, some of whom are fundamentally opposed to our perspective on the transformation of our economy and society. That is the nature of GNU across the world. A GNU is different from a typical coalition nor is it a forum of allied or like-minded parties,” Ramaphosa clarified. His remarks come in response to DA chairperson Helen Zille’s assertion that the Democratic Alliance (DA) was in a coalition government with the African National Congress (ANC) and not in a GNU.
This NEC meeting, the first since the May 29 national and provincial elections where the ANC faced significant losses, was a moment of reflection and strategy. Ramaphosa acknowledged that internal issues like lack of service delivery, arrogance, factions, and corruption had contributed to the ANC’s recent setbacks. However, he remained resolute, stating, “We have suffered a great setback, yet we are neither daunted nor defeated. As a movement, we have in the past weathered many storms, we have walked through many fires. Storms, like fires, soon pass, failure is not final. Setbacks are not defeats; we must never wallow in them. We must learn from them, regroup, and we must adapt accordingly and move on.”
Ramaphosa’s speech also included a call to action for ANC members to stay united and work together to improve service delivery, especially at the municipal level. He highlighted the critical role municipalities play in infrastructure development and creating conditions for business growth, which are vital for achieving inclusive growth. “Together with our Alliance partners, we have agreed that municipalities are most critical for creating the conditions in which businesses can grow and create jobs – and are therefore essential for the achievement of inclusive growth,” he added.
As the ANC navigates this challenging period, Ramaphosa’s vision for a GNU stands as a testament to his commitment to a unified and prosperous South Africa. The president’s message is clear: the ANC may be down, but it is far from out.
