In a powerful and inspiring address, President Cyril Ramaphosa urged South Africans to embrace a spirit of unity and cooperation akin to that of weaver birds. Speaking at the seventh Opening of Parliament in Cape Town on Thursday, Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of collective effort in building a prosperous nation.
“We would like all of us as South Africans to behave like ‘weaver birds’. Weavers are among the most efficient and gregarious birds in that they build complex structures together and co-operate,” Ramaphosa said. “And this is the way we should go. Despite all the challenges, despite our differences, despite all the headwinds, as South Africans we are called upon to remain firmly committed to pursue the path of co-operation, growth, and inclusion.”
A Call to Unity and Growth
The establishment of the Government of National Unity (GNU) has set South Africa on a path towards becoming a “co-operation nation.” This sentiment was at the heart of Ramaphosa’s message as he called for a united front in overcoming the country’s challenges. By working together, Ramaphosa believes that South Africans can achieve great things, much like the weaver birds that build intricate and strong nests through teamwork.
In his address, Ramaphosa reflected on his previous narrative of Tintswalo, a child whose life was transformed by the democratic policies established post-1994. However, he now highlights the imagery of weaver birds to depict a future where political parties, the state, the private sector, labor, and civil society come together to identify priorities and leverage their collective strengths.
The Vision for South Africa
Ramaphosa’s vision is clear: a South Africa where co-operation leads to governance reforms, economic growth, increased investment, and the reduction of unemployment, poverty, and inequality. “South Africans can summit many hills if we work together and rise together,” he proclaimed.
The GNU, according to Ramaphosa, is committed to advancing social justice and equal prosperity for all. Their agenda for the next five years includes promoting inclusive growth, creating jobs, reducing poverty, and addressing the high cost of living. They aim to build a capable, ethical, and developmental state that supports the empowerment of black South Africans, women, and those historically marginalized.
“It must support the empowerment of black South Africans and women, and all those who in the past had been relegated to the fringes of the economy,” Ramaphosa stated. “Through empowerment and transformation, we can ensure that the skills, capabilities, resources, and energies of all South Africans are used to the greatest effect.”
A New Era of Cooperation
Ramaphosa’s address signals a new era of cooperation and collective effort. By drawing inspiration from the weaver birds, he envisions a nation that works together to build a better future for all its citizens.
