In a tragic turn of events, Malawi’s Vice-President Saulos Klaus Chilima died in a plane crash on Monday, as announced by President Lazarus Chakwera in a televised address. The military aircraft, carrying Chilima and nine others, was en route from Lilongwe to Mzuzu Airport when poor visibility forced it to attempt a return to the capital. Unfortunately, the plane crashed, killing everyone on board.
The ill-fated journey began with high hopes but ended in a heartbreaking disaster. The Office of the President and Cabinet revealed that a major search operation was launched within a 10 km radius in a forest reserve to locate the aircraft. President Chakwera mentioned that Malawi had sought assistance from neighboring countries, as well as the US, Britain, Norway, and Israel, in the rescue efforts.
Chilima, aged 51, was a prominent figure in Malawi’s political landscape. Recently, he had been acquitted of corruption charges that had clouded his political career. Seen as a potential candidate for the next presidential election, Chilima’s untimely death is a significant loss for Malawi. He had always maintained his innocence, and just last month, a Malawi court dropped the graft charges against him after the director of public prosecutions filed for the case to be discontinued.
This tragic incident has sent shockwaves throughout the nation. President Chakwera, visibly shaken, expressed his profound sorrow and called for national unity in this difficult time. The loss of Vice-President Chilima is not just a blow to his family and friends but to the entire country, which had looked up to him for leadership and inspiration.
