EFF Slams Joburg Mayor’s Proposal to Hire Foreign Nationals for JMPD
The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in Gauteng have strongly opposed Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero’s recent proposal to recruit foreign nationals into the Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD). This stance comes as Gauteng continues to grapple with a high unemployment rate, currently at 35.1%, and the availability of numerous qualified local candidates.
The EFF has criticized Mayor Morero’s suggestion, calling it a reflection of leadership disconnected from the harsh realities faced by South Africans. In a press release, Nkululeko Dunga, the EFF’s Gauteng provincial chairperson, emphasized the party’s commitment to prioritizing local employment. Dunga stated, “While policing is a valuable skill, it is not a scarce one. There are numerous unemployed policing graduates in Gauteng who could be quickly upskilled and integrated into the force.”
Dunga also challenged the notion that language barriers between police officers and communities could be effectively addressed by hiring foreign nationals. Instead, he advocated for greater investment in training existing officers to improve their language skills and cultural understanding, thereby enhancing their ability to serve all communities.
“There is no scientific evidence to support the claim that the JMPD and SAPS are failing to address crime in areas with high numbers of foreign nationals due to language barriers,” Dunga added, dismissing the idea as unfounded.
The EFF clarified that its opposition to the mayor’s proposal is not rooted in xenophobia but in a desire to ensure that local unemployed citizens are given priority for job opportunities, particularly in critical sectors like policing. The party reiterated that this stance is essential, especially in a province where economic challenges are acute.
As the debate over the employment of foreign nationals in Gauteng intensifies, the EFF’s position underscores its commitment to advocating for local job creation and addressing the province’s unemployment crisis.
