In a significant political development, President Cyril Ramaphosa has unveiled his new Cabinet, marking a historic moment in South African politics. Re-elected for a second term after the ANC lost its outright majority, Ramaphosa announced the formation of a Government of National Unity on Sunday night. This inclusive cabinet features members from the Democratic Alliance (DA) and various other political parties.

Despite a last-minute push by Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to join the government under the condition that it excludes the DA and Freedom Front Plus, Ramaphosa struck a groundbreaking deal with DA leader John Steenhuisen. This agreement allows the DA to lead six ministries, with six additional deputy minister positions.

Key Appointments in the New Cabinet

Ramaphosa announced Paul Mashatile as the new Deputy President, while John Steenhuisen, DA leader, was appointed Minister of Agriculture. This unprecedented move highlights Ramaphosa’s commitment to advancing national interests and leveraging the strengths of various political parties.

“We have had to consider how to form the new government in a manner that advances the national interest, gives due consideration to the outcome of the election, and makes use of the respective capabilities within each of the parties,” said Ramaphosa.

The Cabinet lineup aims to address the immediate needs of the country and ensure focused attention on key issues by separating certain portfolios.
