GHANA BRINGS IN WINFRIED SCHAFER AS DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL AND TECHNICAL ADVISOR
Ghana Appoints Winfried Schafer as Black Stars Technical Advisor
Ghana has made an important move in its bid to rejuvenate the Black Stars’ footballing fortunes by bringing in renowned coach Winfried Schafer as their new technical advisor. The 75-year-old German football expert, famous for guiding Cameroon to victory in the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), has been tasked with a critical role within the Ghana Football Association (GFA). Schafer’s arrival marks a new chapter for Ghanaian football as the country seeks to regain its competitive edge on the African and world stage.
Winfried Schafer’s Role and Responsibilities
Schafer will not only serve as the technical advisor for the Black Stars but also take on the role of Director of Football. This dual position will see him work closely with the current head coach Otto Addo. His extensive experience in African football and his tactical acumen will be key in reshaping the direction of the Black Stars, particularly after their recent setback of failing to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations – a first since 2004.
Tasks and Strategic Plans for Schafer
The Ghana FA has outlined specific duties for Schafer as part of a long-term plan to elevate Ghana’s footballing stature. His main goals include developing and implementing strategic plans for the national team, overseeing youth development programs, and ensuring that the Black Stars maintain consistent high performances on the international stage.
Ghana’s performance in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying campaign will be under intense scrutiny, with the country currently placed second in their group. Only the group winners will automatically secure a place in next year’s tournament in North America, further emphasizing the urgency of Schafer’s involvement.
New Appointments to Support the Black Stars
In addition to Schafer’s appointment, the Ghana Football Association has made other significant changes to the Black Stars coaching setup. Desmond Ofei, the current Ghana Under-20 coach, has been promoted to assistant coach of the senior national team. Alongside him, Kris Perquy has been appointed as the team psychologist, while Gregory de Grauwe, a fellow Belgian, will serve as the team’s chief video analyst.
These appointments aim to bring fresh perspectives and expertise to the team, strengthening the overall structure and approach to football development in Ghana.
Looking Ahead
Ghana’s decision to bring in Schafer is a bold one, reflecting the country’s ambition to return to its dominant position in African football. With the Black Stars currently not in AFCON 2025, they have their sights firmly set on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers. With Schafer’s guidance and the support of the newly appointed staff, Ghana hopes to revitalize their squad and lay the foundation for success in the years ahead.
