RETURNING TO POWER WITH A CRIMINAL RECORD? TRUMP JOINS THE RANKS OF LEADERS WITH LEGAL HISTORIES
Donald Trump’s Conviction and Other World Leaders with Criminal Histories
Donald Trump, once again in the spotlight, is set to make a return to the White House, despite his criminal history. The former U.S. president, who was convicted of numerous charges, faces a controversial future. Trump was convicted of 34 felony counts for falsifying company records related to payments made to adult film actress Stormy Daniels during the 2016 presidential campaign. His trial, which began in April 2024, concluded with a guilty verdict on May 30, 2024.
But Trump is not the only world leader to have faced legal troubles. Throughout history, there have been several heads of state and high-ranking officials whose criminal actions did not stop them from holding significant power. Here’s a look at other world leaders with criminal records:
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva – Brazil
Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, widely known as Lula, served as Brazil’s president from 2003 to 2010. Despite his popularity, Lula was convicted in 2017 on corruption charges and sentenced to prison. In 2018, he was imprisoned for corruption linked to the “Operation Car Wash” scandal, which exposed widespread corruption in Brazil’s political and business sectors. However, in 2021, the Brazilian Supreme Federal Court annulled his convictions, citing issues with the trial. This decision allowed him to run for president again in 2022, where he triumphed in the polls and became president once more.
Benjamin Netanyahu – Israel
Benjamin Netanyahu, Israel’s long-serving Prime Minister, has been embroiled in multiple legal issues. Netanyahu has faced charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust related to his time in office. The allegations focus on accepting gifts from wealthy businessmen and influencing media outlets in exchange for favorable coverage. These charges are still pending, and Netanyahu continues to deny any wrongdoing. Despite these legal battles, he has remained a prominent political figure, continuing to serve as Israel’s Prime Minister.
Najib Razak – Malaysia
Najib Razak, the former Prime Minister of Malaysia, was found guilty of corruption after a series of investigations into his involvement in the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal. He was sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2020 for stealing billions of dollars from the state investment fund. His sentence was later reduced to six years, but Najib has remained in prison since 2022. His conviction has had a profound impact on Malaysia’s political landscape, but he has maintained his influence in the country’s political scene.
Mikheil Saakashvili – Georgia
Mikheil Saakashvili, the former president of Georgia, is another leader with a criminal past. Saakashvili was convicted of abuse of power and corruption charges during his time in office. He fled the country in 2013 but was arrested in 2021 upon returning to Georgia. Saakashvili has been serving a six-year prison sentence after being found guilty of directing riot police to use force against opposition members in 2005. He is also accused of pardoning officials involved in the murder of a man. His case has sparked significant political controversy in Georgia.
Ivo Sanader – Croatia
Ivo Sanader served as Croatia’s Prime Minister from 2003 to 2009. He was later arrested and convicted for corruption, including illegal payments from war profiteering. After fleeing the country to avoid prosecution, Sanader was extradited back to Croatia and sentenced to prison. He was found guilty of taking bribes from businessmen and using his position to secure profits. His conviction has shaken the political environment in Croatia, as many of his actions were tied to the country’s transition to EU membership.
