Former Super Eagles Goalkeeper Fregene on Life Support.
Peter Fregene, a former Nigeria national team goalkeeper, is currently on life support in Oghara, Delta State, battling for survival as his condition remains critical. The news has shaken the Nigerian sports community, drawing widespread concern.
This troubling development was brought to light by Nigerian football legend Segun Odegbami on Wednesday, who called for immediate prayers and support for the stricken ex-international.
“Peter Fregene is in critical condition, on life support,” Odegbami shared in a heartfelt statement. “What he needs more than anything right now is our collective prayers that his Creator’s will be done.”
Fregene, who tended the Super Eagles’ goal from 1968 to 1971 and represented Nigeria at the 1968 Olympics in Mexico, has been grappling with severe health issues for several years.
Earlier in the week, Odegbami raised the alarm over Fregene’s deteriorating health, revealing that the former goalkeeper had been hospitalized in Sapele and was in urgent need of medical attention and financial aid.
“He is still waiting for assistance to be transferred by ambulance to the Oghara Teaching Hospital,” Odegbami noted on Tuesday.
Following his plea, there has been an outpouring of concern from Nigerians. However, Odegbami clarified that while he is not directly managing any fundraising efforts, some individuals have stepped forward to assist with Fregene’s medical care.
“I am not personally collecting any funds for Peter’s family,” Odegbami emphasized. “But if I am requested and given the authority to do so, I will gladly assist.”
Odegbami expressed deep gratitude for the tremendous support shown so far, stating, “I thank all Nigerians for their swift response and kindness in this hour of need.”
Fregene’s current ordeal underscores the long-standing challenges retired Nigerian athletes face. Odegbami lamented the lack of a robust support system for former sports professionals, highlighting the need for a structured welfare scheme.
“Why don’t we have, or create, a welfare plan for both active and retired athletes across all sports in Nigeria? We need a system to take care of our health as we grow older, long after our sports careers are over,” he questioned.
As the football community continues to rally around Fregene, attention now turns to the authorities and compassionate Nigerians who can offer much-needed assistance.
Peter Fregene, who was recalled to the national team for the 1982 African Cup of Nations, remains an iconic figure in Nigerian football history. His current struggle serves as a stark reminder of the hardships many retired athletes endure as they age, often without adequate support.
