De Beers Launches Programme to Support Diamond and Jewellery Startups
In a progressive step to increase inclusivity and sustainability within South Africa’s diamond industry, De Beers Group has opened applications for its flagship business development programme, specifically designed to support local entrepreneurs in the diamond and jewellery sector. Launched in partnership with Raizcorp in 2016, this programme extends beyond traditional training, representing a transformative vision aligned with South Africa’s strategic industry goals.
Richard Steenkamp, Senior Sales and Office Manager at De Beers Sightholder Sales South Africa, highlighted the company’s role: “As South Africa’s oldest mining company and part of Anglo American’s operations, De Beers is committed to transforming the local diamond industry toward inclusivity and sustainability.”
This initiative underscores De Beers’ focus on fostering entrepreneurship, which is pivotal for regional economic growth and job creation. As a central component of De Beers’ Beneficiation Strategy, the programme is designed to empower entrepreneurs with critical business skills and tailored mentorship over a three-year period. Participants, particularly those involved in diamond beneficiation, jewellery design, manufacturing, and retail, will receive hands-on training from experienced business leaders.
Steenkamp noted, “One of our primary goals is to support the development of entrepreneurs who may one day become De Beers Sightholders.” This prestigious designation is awarded to select diamantaires worldwide, allowing them exclusive rights to purchase De Beers’ rough diamonds.
Reflecting the programme’s success, in 2023, De Beers celebrated its first black-owned Sightholder—an inspiring graduate of the inaugural 2016 cohort. This achievement highlights the programme’s potential to transform not just individual businesses but also the broader industry landscape.
Eligible entrepreneurs are encouraged to apply, with preference given to businesses operating for more than 18 months. Prospective participants must meet all requirements, including obtaining licensure from the South African Diamond and Precious Metals Regulator (SADPMR). Applications close on 31 October 2024.
Steenkamp added, “This programme is a significant investment in the future of the diamond sector and South Africa’s broader economy.” By supporting local entrepreneurs, De Beers reaffirms its commitment to innovation and transformation, working towards a more inclusive future in the diamond industry.
