ANC Takes Action on Internal Leaks with New Investigation Committee
In a move aimed at safeguarding the African National Congress (ANC) from internal leaks, ANC Secretary-General Fikile Mbalula announced the formation of a new committee to address the recurring issue of leaked party information. This committee, a permanent addition to the ANC’s National Executive Committee (NEC), will consist of seasoned ANC members and experienced professionals, specifically selected to tackle the problem of unauthorized disclosures.
Mbalula’s remarks came during a press briefing on Tuesday, where he emphasized the need for the ANC to protect its integrity and prevent leaks of sensitive discussions and decisions. Referring to certain members as “constipated” with factionalism and divisive politics, he criticized those who leak NEC and National Working Committee (NWC) documents to the media and political opponents, undermining the organization’s unity.
Leaked Information Affecting ANC’s Standing
For years, the ANC has been grappling with the issue of internal sources leaking confidential information, including meeting minutes, WhatsApp messages, and important internal documents. These leaks often expose party divides and controversial discussions, sometimes even making their way to opposition parties. According to Mbalula, these sources, some from within the NEC, distort the ANC’s stance, adding unnecessary confusion and impacting the party’s image.
“Members of the ANC must self-respect,” Mbalula urged, emphasizing that it’s essential to uphold the party’s integrity. To counteract this ongoing issue, the newly established committee will conduct forensic audits, investigating potential leaks and holding individuals accountable for breaches of trust.
Media Freedom and Journalistic Protection
Mbalula reassured the press that the ANC’s new measures would not infringe upon media freedom or the protection of journalistic sources. “This does not concern the media… You are protected,” he stated, making it clear that the investigation would focus solely on ANC members involved in the unauthorized dissemination of information. The aim is to preserve the party’s internal processes while maintaining media personnel’s rights and freedoms.
2026 Local Government Election Preparations
The ANC’s action to address internal leaks comes as the party gears up for the 2026 local government elections, a significant test of its leadership and public standing. With this new investigative body in place, the ANC seeks to present a unified front, free from factional influences and disruptive leaks that could impact its preparations.
By reinforcing its commitment to transparency within its ranks, the ANC aims to restore trust among its members and the public as it strives for success in the upcoming elections. This initiative marks a step towards maintaining discipline within the party and aligning its members with the ANC’s broader vision.
