NIGERIA AT IT AGAIN: “TWICE AS TALL” BY BURNA BOY AND “BROWN SKIN GIRL” DIRECTED BY JENN NKIRU NOMINATED FOR 2021 GRAMMY AWARDS

When YouTube featured Wizkid on YouTube originals (A Day In the Live Wizkid), the world saw a world class performance by the Nigerian afro star.  When Beyoncé released Black is King, the world was served the best from Nigeria and her talents. Tiwa Savage moments on New York Times when Celia was released was priceless. Citation movie being No 1 on Netflix after being screened for a little over a week constitutes moments that make most of us feel proud as Africans. To cut the long story short, it is undebatable that Nigeria has always put Africa on the world map on countless occasions. Talking of putting Africa on the world map, “we dey rock Grammy 2021 woo” in my Nigerian Tone.

The album “Twice as tall” by Burna Boy is nominated for the Best Global Album category. And what is more exciting is that it’s the second time in a row that Burna is nominated for a Grammy award. The category is for albums “containing at least 51% playing time of new vocal or instrument global music recordings. The album recorded over 50 million streams on Audiomack after its release a month ago.

Meanwhile, Beyonce’s “Brown Skin Girl” directed by Nigerian-British director Jenn Nkiru is also nominated for the Best Music Video at the 2021 Grammy awards. In an interview released by Essence in August 2020, Nkiru who was the only female director on the “Black is King” project said: “I just think brown skin, black skin, dark skin is so beautiful. I just see the divinity in it. Its gorgeous.This was meant to be an affirmation of that. That’s the intent of it, to be an affirmation.”

Queen Bey leads nominations with 9 including Best Music Film for “Black is King”, Best Music Video for “Brown Skin Girl”, Best Song of the Year, for “Black Parade”.

H.E.R
American singer and song writer who has previously won a Grammy Award is also on the run in the 2021 Grammy Awards under the category of song of the year and best R&B song.

MEGAN THEE STALLION
The 25-year American rapper, singer and songwriter originally from Houston, Texas is nominated for Best New Artist of the Year while her song “SAVAGE” is up for Record of the Year, Best Rap song and Best Rap Performance.

CHLOE X HALLE
The duo got nominated for best traditional R&B performance, best R&B song and best progressive R&B album.
